Case Study: Terraced House insulation projects

Andy Walker is a founding member of the SURE Energy Group he's been working steadily on his house over the years to improve the insulation and cut down the draughts.

One of the main ideas behind starting the SURE Group was to be able to pass on the easy ways that a house can be made warmer - and reduce the fuel bills at the same time.

Insulating a stone built terrace house in Otley

I live in a terraced house in Otley and I'm a big enthusiast of insulation as one of the main ways to reduce fuel costs. I think its important to reduce my energy use, and in so doing my carbon footprint, as a way to trying to prevent runaway climate change.

Older houses are harder to treat than some others but its always possible to make a room warmer.

  • 50mm insulation in a dry lined wall in the front room.
  • 75mm underfloor insulation below the kitchen and front room.
  • 50mm attic ceiling insulation - applied to the inside sloping surface of the roof.
  • Double glazed windows pretty much everywhere.
  • Insulating and heat reflecting foil attached to the wall behind every central heating radiator in the house -- double thickness behind those on an outside wall.
  • All of the underfloor central heating pipes are insulated with expanded foam sleeves..
  • Draught sealant round the skirting boards -- including expanding foam applied from within the cellar to really stop the draughts around the edges of the floorboards.
  • Chimney opening blocked off to stops draughts (just a trickle vent in place).
  • Draught strips fitted to the outside doors.
  • Extended curtain in the front room to cover the door as well as the windows.
.
Draught proofing is important too

Reducing the draughts in my home reduces the fuel bills as well. So as part of a major redocoration project I added silcon sealant around all of the skirting board edges and expanding foam to fill other draughty cracks.

The result of this has been to make the room between 5 and 10 °C warmer and now I rarely have my central heating on - in fact last winter the first time I put it on was in mid November.
